A full day of sketching for another global sketchcrawl event.

Here is a small oil painting I did yesterday of the Howick waterfalls. We stayed over in Howick when Charles and Jan got married in January 2010. Dad and I went to see the falls and I took some pics there which I used for reference here. Generally I’m not one who consiously thinks much [...]

Saturday the 24 September we went sketching up on Northcliff Hill. The view of Johannesburg was amazing up there, but we ended up going around the back to try get out of the wind as it was really really cold! (Having dressed for another hot summer day.) We only lasted until around midday until it [...]

Last year October we did a sketchcrawl at the Joburg War Museum which was such fun and inspiring. I knew I needed to do some more, so not too long ago I sat down and did a whole bunch of sketches of tanks. Unfotunately this time I had to use pics off the internet as [...]

Brightwater Commons in Randburg was the location for another afternoon of sketching. We chose to try and sketch the skaters at the crowded skate park. Gave up on it after one sketch and decided to focus on a stationary kiddies fire engine – well, almost, it did bob from side to side as children went [...]

Some sketches from last Saturday’s (18 June 2011) sketching day at Montecasino, again. We decided to meet up for the Italian festival this time. They had an interesting show of Italian flag throwers as well as some beautiful Lamborghinis on display. It was a real challenge to try and sketch the flag throwers with all [...]

Dad made me a perfect fitting for my camera tripod to be transformed into an ultra portable and flexible easel for plein air painting and urban sketching. I painted the picture below on the farm (Silvermere), looking down the road. Mom faced the other direction to paint the sunset. There was a fierce wind to [...]

Second Cup Coffee Shop was the perfect place for us to gather for another bout of creativity. On this occasion I turned to my oil paints and make-shift camera tripod easel.

Some time ago I bought someones old collection of watercolour palettes (ice cube trays) with lots of paint still in them at a bargain sale. Of course I was not interested in the palettes, but the paint left in them. One of the colours I transferred to my pallette was Prussian Green – which I’ve [...]

The Lion Park is a popular tourist attraction nearby which I’ve taken numerous friends to and the highlight for them is always playing with the lion cubs. They make for good reference pics!

Saturday 16th April was the 31st Worldwide Sketchcrawl. Six of us spent the day at Montecasino sketching. The day was cold and rainy, so it was good that we were able to sketch inside. My first drawing was of this little police car which I thought appropriate since we heard that the watercolour society was [...]

I think its harder to find something worthwhile saying about this drawing than creating the drawing itself. Anyway, I noticed that maybe the flowers and building are escaping too. Which I suppose is not the cleverest of ideas for them. But the pink thing is enjoying the idea of the man escaping. Maybe you can [...]

When I stayed at my friend’s house in India there was this quiet, elderely man who, apparently, wasn’t actually a relative, yet tended to hang around there so much of the time. He always seemed to have this wonderful gentle smile on his face. The little daughter of the family just loved being around him. [...]

The inspiration for this drawing was actually the old truck / tractor which I photographed in Dhanaula, India. And it actually looked pretty similar to the way I drew it – except of course the bending metal bars. The dodo was a bit of an afterthought.

This was actually done some time back when I had just bought a whole bunch of new watercolours and wanted to test them out in my new pallette. Its one of those pictures I did not actually “finish”, but on returning to it I decided I don’t really care to add any more to it.

Not too sure what came over me to paint yet another cow. You see I have a half finished oil painting facing the wall of some thousands upon thousands of Friesland cattle. Anyway, this is a bit different being in watercolour. We came across this one on our trip to the Vaal. You have [...]

Today was well spent sketching at the Johannesburg Zoo with fellow Joburg Sketchers. The challenge was to try not spend too much time walking around, but more time actually drawing. To find animals that didn’t move every second. I was actually very impressed with how well kept the zoo was. SO much one can draw [...]

Well, I won’t tell you “where & when” I drew this little drawing. Simply to say that Craig (our church leader) preached a terrific sermon on the last chapter of Jonah last Sunday(20 March 2011). I’ve heard many many many messages on the book of Jonah and this has to be one of the best [...]

Ideas seldom arrive in their complete fullness when I start out a drawing of this sort. Mostly I have no idea what I will create. As one works, the ideas flow, a break for tea, then a return for a fresh look and more to add. So the order of creation ran something like this: [...]

A rather uncreative title, but then such images are not created from any clever thinking. Actually there really is not much to say about it. I did create this last year in fact with a favourite 0.1 fine liner pen which I got a bit hooked on. (the drawing is only A4 in size.)

Saturday morning was spent at Liebermann’s Pottery painting. A good number of sketchers turned up this time. One even traveling from as far off as Pretoria! Finding it really exciting seeing enthusiastic artists join the group. I was so inspired by the Old Gas Works building I didn’t even get round to sketching any of [...]

An oil painting of the ocean view from Schoenmakerskop, off the beautiful Port Elizabeth coastline. I actually took the reference photos back in 2008 and have been wanting to do a decent sea painting for a while now. It was a new challenge which I thoroughly enjoyed it and certainly plan to do more in [...]
